presentation on motivation

We did our group presentation on Motivation today and i thought it went well. We covered intrisic and extrinsic motivations, as well displayed maslows hierachy of needs pyramid showing what motivates us to satify both needs of survival and needs that we dont really need to satify but still want to grasp. Also discussed was how different people may be motivated depending on the laedership style, so in sport some coaches may motivate followers by fear and some may use motivational speach to boost spirits. I myself have experienced all types of coaches in my 18 years of hockey.

team presentations

i think the teams have done very goos presentations so far on communication verbal and non verbal, and i like the activities they have done with the class as it gets everyone engaged. The non verbal task of bringing the pole done with everyones fingers underneath was pretty cool, and shows how hard it can be to get things done properly or quickly without being able to communicate verbally.

communication

We have been learning about conversational rules and the difference between low-context and high context cultures. I think its pretty interresting how different cultures can be when communicating, like how high contex cultures often dont show true feelings or give meaning to puases or delays in conversations were low context think of pauses as awkward.

leadership paper #2

I wrote paper number two on John Maxwell's theory of leadership, and i didn't realize that people went that in depth about what leaders mean to them. He has 21 laws which define leadership to him, usually people have a pretty simple explanation of what they interpret as a leader. Although there is no clear, right or wrong answer to what a leader is i think its cool that people like Maxwell put that much thought into it.

elevator project

Last week we were expected to get on an elevator and face the people/person on it and see how they reacted without any verbal communication. I did this in the residence elevator to two girls and they looked at me like i was a creep and didnt say anything.

In my first week of class i have learned a lot of terms and theories on leadership i did not know about. I didn't realize that it was split into four approaches and personally i think they are all legit and i have leaned towards all of them and some point in my life.
